Two first-half goals from the fleet-footed Adam Princess were all the 10-time Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) champions, Delta Queens, needed to secure all three points at the Steven Keshi International Stadium in Asaba when they faced the visiting Benue Queens of Makurdi.
The Coach Peter Dedevbo-led side, who lost their first game of the season by a lone goal to perennial rivals Bayelsa Queens in Yenagoa, began the match with fiery determination.
The More Girls consistently attacked the Benue Queens' vital area from the whistle and maintained the pressure, but their attacking forays were firmly stopped by the Benue Queens goalkeeper, Stella Okereke.
However, the pressure paid off in the 13th minute when Adam Princess latched onto a loose ball inside the visitors' penalty area and slammed home a fiery shot into the top corner.
The diminutive winger again provided the hosts with the assurance goal in the 43rd minute after sweeping past two defenders and rolling a low shot into the bottom corner to seal victory for the Asaba-based outfit.
The second half was pulsating, but Delta Queens failed to capitalize on a flurry of chances created by the fleet-footed Destiny Itobor. However, the resilience of goalkeeper Stella Okereke kept them at bay, ensuring that the Benue Queens were not handed another humiliating defeat after being walloped 5-0 in match day one by Robo Queens of Lagos.
Speaking after the match, the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, lauded the team for their superlative performance.
According to him, the girls performed beyond expectations, especially considering that they had been together for less than a month before the start of the new season.
He, however, encouraged them to strive to convert every chance created in their upcoming matches, starting with their away match against Adamawa Queens.
The Chairman of the Delta State House of Assembly House Committee on Sports, Honorable Emmanuel Sinebe, also commended the More Girls for securing all three points, saying it was clear that the girls were determined to bring smiles to the face of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who had continued to invest in the sports sector.
Sinebe urged them to sustain the momentum in their upcoming matches, as that was the only way to reciprocate the governor’s significant investment in the sports sector.
The Chairman of the Delta State Football Association, Godwin Adode, as well as the Director General of the Delta State Sports Commission, Festus Ohwojero, while congratulating the girls for claiming all three points, charged them to redouble their efforts in the remaining matches. They emphasized that they cannot afford to waste opportunities against more established sides if they are serious about finishing at the top of the table.
Coach Peter Dedevbo of Delta Queens, while lauding his team for winning the game, expressed sadness over the many missed chances. He said he would try to correct these errors in the next match against Adamawa Queens.
Coach Dedevbo, a former Super Falcons coach, thanked the Chairman and board of the state sports commission, led by Onoriode Oborevwori, for their support and assured that the girls would not disappoint in their next match against Adamawa Queens.
Coach Liadi Bashiru of Benue Queens, while lamenting the few chances created by his team, described his side as a team for the future. He also stated that the technical crew would make adjustments in their next home match.
