2024/2025 NWFL Match Day 10: Heartland Queens dare Edo Queens in epic showdown

Posted : 01 April 2025

A fierce duel is in the offing as familiar foes, Edo Queens and visitors Heartland Queens, clash in Wednesday's NWFL Premiership Matchday 10 at the main bowl of Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State.

When the two sides met on Matchday 2 of the ongoing top flight in Owerri, it was the champions and leaders who went home with all smiles after a 2-1 win against the hosts, Heartland Queens.

Ahead of Wednesday's showdown, both teams were victorious in their Matchday 9 fixtures. While the fourth-best club side in Africa, Edo Queens, out-punched their oriental hosts, Abia Angels, with a 2-1 win in Umuahia, the Owerri landladies narrowly defeated Omoluabi Ekiti, Ekiti Queens, with a 1-0 scoreline in Owerri.

So far, the ongoing season has been sweet for the Benin City side, as they sit atop the group's table, facing their visitors, Heartland Queens, who are just managing to stay afloat above the relegation zone.

The pride of the Owerri side is still hurt by the three points they surrendered to the Benin City side on their home turf and will be determined to right the wrongs with a sweet result to take back to their teeming fans in Owerri.

Of course, it will not be a walkover for either side, but the Owerri team must find the key to unlocking the defense. The slightly relieved head coach, Obi Ogbala, is known for not shying away from daunting tasks and is capable of conjuring almost the impossible.

The talented goalkeeper, Amarachi Atulayo, who missed the matchup against Ekiti Queens in Owerri, may return to her duties and will be well shielded by the usuals—Oluomachi Onwere, Kelechi Orgii, Ezinne Wokocha, and Nnenna Williams—as well as the usual options in midfield, including Faith Samson, Endurance Omoraka, Chizoba Johnson, and Ola Olaronke. Blessing Saleh, the match-winner against Ekiti Queens, will get the nod to continue finding the back of the net, with support from captain Chimebere Opara, Chinwendu Orji, Emmanuella James, and Onyinyechi Kalu.

The Owerri side is in desperate need of a good result in the Benin City showdown, as they will soon make a short road trip to their next-door oriental neighbors, Abia Angels, for a Matchday 11 game.

Heartland Queens are sixth in the eight-team group, with eight points—15 points behind their opponents and leaders, Edo Queens.
