Red-hot Edo Queens Football Club of Benin continued their unbeaten run in the Nigeria Women Football League Premiership as they thrashed Heartland Queens of Owerri 2-0 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
The defending champions have maintained their supremacy over their contemporaries since the beginning of the 2024/25 season.
They have played 10 matches without any defeat. With yesterday's victory over Heartland Queens, the Benin Queens are at the top of Group A, with 26 points from 10 matches.
With just four games remaining in the regular season, the Moses Aduku-led ladies have automatically qualified for the Super 6, regardless of the outcome of the remaining matches.
Edo Queens forward Mary Mamudu opened the scoring for the home side in the 37th minute. The muscular ladies from Owerri did all they could to get a goal, but the Benin City-based ladies dominated in all departments of the game, leaving no stone unturned.
Both teams resumed the second half looking aggressively hungry for goals, but the defending champions kept putting pressure on the visitors.
The consistent pressure from Edo Queens resulted in a penalty, as the Owerri ladies couldn’t absorb the pressure.
In a goalmouth scramble, the ball rolled into the hands of a Heartland Queens defender. The center referee quickly pointed to the penalty spot. Wasting no time, the lanky Esther Inyang positioned the ball and went straight for the penalty kick, converting it into a goal in the 74th minute, giving the host team a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Edo Queens have been nothing short of remarkable this season, boasting a record of 8 wins, 2 draws, and maintaining a fantastic unbeaten run.
Having collected 26 points from 10 matches, the prestigious Super 6 ticket can be said to be sealed.
Available records show that Edo Queens, Remo Stars Ladies, and Nasarawa Amazons are the three major contenders for the Super 6 slot in Group A.
Meanwhile, Edo State Sports Commission boss Hon. Enabulele Desmond commended the team for their stellar performance, reiterating the government’s commitment to ensuring massive support for the team. He stressed that the state government would do all it can to motivate the team for even greater success.
"I must commend the team for their exploits; they are truly making the State proud. I'm so happy with the entire team. We are almost there, and I would like them to maintain this tempo. The road to Super 6 is clear, and football fans across the country are looking to Edo Queens to win the NWFL Premiership title back-to-back. I know my players have everything it takes to do it. Once again, I say congratulations to us."
