2024/2025 NPFL Season: Stadium contractor gives update on Sunshine Stars' return to Akure Stadium

Posted : 09 January 2025

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) club, Sunshine Stars, will finally have the opportunity to return to the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure for their league home games in February 2025.

This was confirmed by the Project Manager of Reform Sports West Africa Limited, Sani Mohammed.

The Owena Whales have not had a stable home turf since the Akure Township Stadium was closed for renovations. Initially, Sunshine Stars settled for the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode but later relocated to the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne when the former venue became unavailable again.

Reform Sports West Africa, the construction company contracted by the Ondo State Government in 2024 to renovate the Ondo State Sports Complex, has been working diligently to complete the project.

Speaking in an interview, Mohammed assured fans and stakeholders, saying, "The company can assure the fans and stakeholders in Ondo State that Sunshine Stars will play their first home game this season in Akure by February 2025."

“The grasses to be used for the pitch are not sourced from Nigeria, and they must go through production and clearing processes. Right now, we are in the process of clearing. So, I can guarantee you that by February this year, Sunshine Stars will be back at their home ground,” he added.

He further explained that the full renovation of the sports complex will be completed by the middle of 2025.

“By the middle of the year, June or July, with the support of the state and the Ministry, I can assure you that the sports complex will be completed.”

In his conclusion, Sani Mohammed called on fans and stakeholders to continue supporting Sunshine Stars and encouraging the team in every possible way. He also urged for more support and encouragement for the sports administrators in Ondo State.
