The main bowl of ‘The Cathedral’, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, will come alive on Thursday, Oct. 3, as the reigning NPFL champions, Rangers International, seek the maximum points at stake in the rescheduled Match Day 3 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) 2024/2025 fixture against Bayelsa United.
Still feeling the pain of the 2-1 loss to the current table-topping side, Remo Stars, at the weekend in Ikenne, the team coached by Fidelis Ilechukwu looks fit and ready to perform against the Laddan Bosso-led side, which picked up a draw at home in Yenagoa when Kwara United visited.
The ‘Flying Antelopes’ will be welcoming back midfielder Kazeem Ogunleye, who was greatly missed in the Ikenne debacle due to a match suspension. Wing-back Effimi Nsi and captain Chinecherem Ugwueze are also expected to be at their best to help the Coal City side apply the necessary pressure on the league's early pace setters.
With four points from three matches played in the NPFL this season, currently occupying the 12th spot on the log, the players appreciate the task at hand, as expressed by the team captain, Chinemerem Ugwueze. He stated that the team was determined to give its best and achieve the expected result to strengthen their resolve to successfully defend the title they won last season.
“No team is a small team anymore. Bayelsa United is a respected side under a great coach, but we have our work cut out for us. It is the maximum points that we are targeting, and I am optimistic that we will get our acts together to make our supporters happy at the end of the encounter,” said the young skipper of Rangers.
Head to Head
In 16 matches between both teams, Rangers have won 5 matches, while the Yenagoa side has won 4, and seven matches have ended in draws. The Enugu side defeated their opponents 3-0 in their last encounter in May 2024, after previously suffering a 2-0 loss in Yenagoa in December 2023.
