2024/2025 NPFL rescheduled Match Day 17: Enyimba continues revival under Eguma, records second win

Posted : 10 January 2025

The newly appointed gaffer of Enyimba International FC, Stanley Eguma, has continued the revival of the team by securing a 2-1 win over a hard-fighting Nasarawa United FC.

The nine-time league champions, the Peoples Elephant, dusted off their seven-match winless streak, which had begun with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Mozambique’s Black Bulls on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

In a thrilling yet agonizing encounter, the Solid Miners fell short on the road, losing 2-1 to Enyimba FC in a rescheduled Matchday 17 game in the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League season at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba, Abia State.

Despite Anas Yusuf canceling out Joseph Atule's first-half goal—his eleventh in the current campaign for the Solid Miners—Nasarawa United could not capitalize on their second-half momentum and ultimately succumbed to a 63rd-minute winner courtesy of former 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner with the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Brown Ideye.

The game got off to a blistering start, with both teams creating opportunities. Enyimba struck first through Joseph Atule at the stroke of half-time.

However, the current league's top scorer, Anas Yusuf, leveled the score for United with a well-crafted goal off Qamar Adegoke's assist, thirteen minutes into the second half—his 11th for the Solid Miners this season.

Former Nigerian international Brown Ideye came off the bench to restore the home side's lead just four minutes later, with Joseph Atule providing the assist.

Anas Yusuf, who helped Nigeria's Super Eagles' Team B secure the CHAN 2025 Championship ticket, nearly drew United level again but missed a sitter to the disbelief of the visitors.

The Aba Elephants held firm to the scoreline until full-time to snatch the winner, leaving United to rue their missed chances.

The loss leaves the Solid Miners in 20th position with nineteen points from nineteen games, while Enyimba moves up to 7th position with twenty-seven points from seventeen games.

With the league currently on a mid-season break, Nasarawa United will look to fortify their squad before their next home game against visiting Katsina United FC on January 19, 2025, when the second half of the season commences.

The coach of Nasarawa United FC, Kabir Dogo, said the team was devastated by the loss.

"We created a series of opportunities to win the game, but unfortunately, we couldn't capitalize on them."

"We are looking forward to rejigging the team during the mid-season break to address our challenges, particularly in the finishing area, as we enter the last and toughest part of the league campaign."
