2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 8: Niger Tornadoes winless at Bako Stadium, persist after Rivers United win

Posted : 22 October 2024

Niger Tornadoes' homecoming has been marked by mixed fortunes, as their much-anticipated return to Minna after several seasons has been marred by inconsistent results, dampening the enthusiasm of their eager home fans.

Earning just three points out of a possible 12 at home is disappointing, and fans, who turned out in large numbers, have watched in disbelief.

Coaches, working tirelessly to improve performance, have been left scratching their heads, searching for a quick solution to end the poor run.

Away results have outshined what has been achieved at home. Only Rivers United and Remo Stars have earned more points on the road than Niger Tornadoes' seven.

The Niger Tornadoes players seemed confident going into the game, and the coaches were seen consulting each other to devise a better strategy for the crucial match. It was evident on their faces, but football had different answers.

The Ikon Allah Boys had a disrupted first half due to strong winds affecting ball movement towards the north end of the stadium. Nonetheless, many chances were created, but none were converted, even as the visitors sat back and launched intermittent counterattacks.

Winger Olawale Emmanuel was brought down in the box early in the game, but the referee waved play on.

Tornadoes' attacking intent suffered a blow when Kufre Ebong sustained an injury in the 26th minute and was substituted, making way for Jonas Emmanuel.

The first half ended on an exciting note, with fans enjoying the football on display, cheering the players as they headed to the dressing room, anticipating goals in the second half.

The second half began with the visitors taking an early lead, albeit controversially. Seiyefa Jackson headed in a free kick, with two Rivers United players in offside positions, but the officials allowed the goal despite Tornadoes' protests.

The hosts intensified their attacking efforts to equalize, making several incursions into Rivers United's defense, but all attempts were thwarted by the visitors' disciplined backline.

The game ended in a disappointing home defeat for Niger Tornadoes.

Majin Mohammed, reacting post-match, said the result left him with mixed feelings.

"It’s one of those days; sometimes, you win, draw, or lose.

"We played well, had our chances, but couldn’t convert them."

"My opinion about the goal won't change the result; the referee's decision is final."

"We take on Katsina United next. We'll work hard to get something from that game."
