After securing five draws in seven matches, Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) returnee El-Kanemi Warriors FC of Maiduguri is now set to take on the nine-time league winners, Enyimba International FC.
The 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 8 will take place in Maiduguri, as the visitors, the People's Elephant, have earlier complained about the long and tiring trip to the Nigerian border state.
The chairman of the nine-time champions and Super Eagles legend, Nwankwo Kanu, stated that his team had spent three grueling days on the road ahead of their clash against the unbeaten Warriors.
Despite the tumultuous journey, Kanu says he expects that his Enyimba will take all three points against the Desert Warriors.
Kanu knows that Nigeria's most successful club side, Enyimba FC, is set to face a stern test both on and off the pitch as they prepare for this crucial NPFL match.
The People's Elephants, currently seeking their first win in three matches, have endured a grueling journey to reach Maiduguri for Sunday’s clash.
Enyimba's travel ordeal began on Thursday after they endured a tough 1-1 draw against Niger Tornadoes. The team departed from Aba with mixed feelings from the stalemate.
Their journey to Maiduguri, however, lasted until Saturday morning, leaving them with less than 24 hours to recover and prepare for the match.
Not long after they arrived, the club took to social media to rally support from their fans, posting, "The People's Elephant journeys to Maiduguri for Sunday’s battle with the Warriors."
This message reminds the faithful supporters of the importance of the upcoming fixture as Enyimba looks to solidify their position in the top four of the NPFL table.
Currently, Enyimba sits third in the league standings with 14 points. Their recent form has been a mix of results, with two wins, two draws, and one loss in their last five matches.
The team is eager to bounce back after consecutive draws, including their last home encounter against Niger Tornadoes in Aba.
Their opponents, El-Kanemi Warriors, present a formidable challenge. The FA Cup champions are the only unbeaten side left in the Football League, although they currently occupy the 13th position with eight points.
Yemi Olanrewaju, the Enyimba coach, will have to find a way to get his team to quickly shake off fatigue.
The Warriors' recent form shows resilience in the Football League, with one win and four draws in their last five matches.
As the clash approaches, all eyes will be on how Enyimba manages to overcome their travel fatigue and maintain their competitive edge.
The match not only represents an opportunity for the People's Elephants to regain their winning form but also to potentially end El-Kanemi's unbeaten run.
