2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 7: Ikorodu City FC compounds Heartland FC's woes

Posted : 18 October 2024

Ikorodu City FC on Thursday picked up another point on the road in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 7 fixture against Heartland of Owerri.

It was the second consecutive time that the Oga Boys went ahead in a fixture, earning four points in two consecutive games.

At the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Ikorodu City started strong, taking the game to the home side and were rewarded within the first five minutes of the match by taking the lead.

After good work from Alade Solomon, who held up play, Waliu Ojetoye made a darting run, received a pass from Solomon, and sent a good cross into the box that was met by Salau Yusuf’s header. The ball was then deflected in by the home side's defender to give Ikorodu the lead.

Ayomide Cole picked up an injury after being knocked down in the 23rd minute and was replaced by Chineme Chinonso.

Tosin Oyedokun also had to leave the pitch with a stomach problem in the same minute and was replaced by Toyeeb Ajeyigbe.

The first half wore on like an eternity, with the goal shaking the home side and forcing them to attack more, but the break came with Ikorodu City leading.

A couple of changes in the second half for the home side allowed them to start in the ascendancy, creating a few chances.

The home side equalized in the 66th minute thanks to a strike from Chukwuma Agor that beat Aina in goal.

From then on, there was desperate pressure from the home side to get the winner.

Chibuike and Leonard were called into action numerous times, and the center-backs stood their ground, providing a powerful performance to keep Ikorodu in the game, along with the full-backs and goalkeeper Aina.

With eight minutes left to play, Toyeeb Ajeyigbe received a second yellow card and was sent off, forcing Ikorodu City FC to finish the game with ten men.

Six minutes of stoppage time were added but extended to twelve before the final whistle blew, as the Oga Boys picked up a vital point on the road.

Up next for Ikorodu City FC is a visit from Daniel Amokachi’s Lobi Stars, set to take place on Monday, October 21, 2024, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, with kickoff at 3:00 PM.
