2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 6: Abia Warriors' Megwo condemns Kwara United to another defeat

Posted : 14 October 2024

Sunday Megwo proved to be Kwara United Football Club of Ilorin’s nemesis once again, as his second-half goal earned Abia Warriors of Umuahia a well-deserved 1-0 victory in the rescheduled Matchday 6 of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League encounter at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

The match, originally scheduled for Saturday, October 12, 2024, was moved to the following day due to heavy rainfall that rendered the pitch unplayable. Match Commissioner Edema Fuludu, after consulting with the match officials, league organizers, and officials of both clubs, rescheduled the match for Sunday, October 13.

Abia Warriors' coach, Imama Amapakabo, made just one change to the side that lost to Rangers in Enugu, with Daniel Ekpo starting ahead of fellow left-footer Ayodele Ezekiel.

The game lived up to expectations, being entertaining, intriguing, and captivating.

Umu Chineke had a slow start, and Kwara United, under the guidance of former Abia Warriors assistant coach Tunde Sani, took the game to the home side, with Shola Abdulraheem orchestrating play from midfield.

Despite their early dominance, Kwara United failed to create any clear-cut chances on goal, allowing the home side to gradually grow into the game, with Sunday Megwo testing the visitors' defense.

The first half ended goalless, but the spectators who filled the stadium were thoroughly entertained.

In the second half, the Pride of Abia took control, launching a series of attacks as the visitors sat back to absorb the pressure.

In the 62nd minute, Coach Imama Amapakabo replaced Paul Sampson and Daniel Ekpo with Emmanuel Onu and Ayodele Ezekiel. Twelve minutes later, Ezekiel provided the assist for the decisive goal.

A free kick deep in Kwara United's half was perfectly delivered by Ayodele Ezekiel, and Sunday Megwo rose highest to head it home for Abia Warriors, marking his second goal of the season.

This was Megwo's second consecutive goal against Kwara United in as many seasons.

Kwara United head coach Tunde Sani made several substitutions in a bid to salvage a point, but Umu Chineke maintained control until the final whistle, securing their victory.
