The Technical Manager of Rivers United, Finidi George, has hailed his players for securing maximum points against Akwa United.
The Pride of Rivers moved to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League after Ndifreke Effiong's debut goal sealed a hard-fought win over Akwa United. Stephen Manyo opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a clinical half-volley directly from Okon Aniekeme's corner kick, but Friday Apollo's strike just after the second-half restart leveled the scores.
Taiwo Abdulrafiu capped off a man-of-the-match performance, initiating the build-up that led to Seiyefa Jackson's assist for Ndifreke Effiong, who popped up with five minutes remaining to net the strike that sent Rivers United to the NPFL summit after five successive unbeaten matches.
George said, "It was a difficult three points. Akwa came in here to fight and see how they could get a draw, so we must commend them for putting in that effort.
"It's not easy, but at the end of the day, we got those three points."
Rivers United will face Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium (Karkanda Stadium) on Sunday, October 13.
