Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Chris Green, on Sunday splashed cash on players of Rivers United FC following their gutsy 2-1 victory over Akwa United on Match Day 5 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
Green rewarded the players with two million naira following the win—their fourth of the season, which saw them depose Remo Stars and move to the summit of the NPFL.
Goals from Stephen Manyo and Ndifreke Effiong guaranteed the win for the Port Harcourt club, under extremely difficult weather conditions at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.
Speaking after the victory which catapulted "the Pride of Rivers" to the top of the table, Green praised the fighting spirit of the team.
"I commend you all for the fighting spirit, effort, and zeal which you showed today in this game," said the three-time Sports Commissioner.
"However, I urge you all not to rest on your laurels. The league is a marathon and not a sprint, and nothing has yet been achieved.
"Continue to fight and push your limits until the final day of the season. Play like you played today in your remaining matches, and the good people of Rivers State will be proud of you," he concluded.
It is the second time Green, one of Africa's foremost and most respected sports administrators, has rewarded Rivers United for sterling performances.
On September 21, 2024, the erudite administrator splashed the sum of five hundred thousand naira to the management of the club, one million naira to the Finidi George-led technical crew, and two million naira to the players after they defeated Lobi Stars 1-0 in Lafia to complete their first away win of the season.
Rivers United currently occupy top spot in the NPFL standings with 13 points from a possible 15.
They are the only unbeaten side in the NPFL this season.
