A more resolute Nasarawa United FC on Saturday sent the league debutant, Ikorodu City FC, to the bottom of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League standings after a spirited 2-1 victory.
The second consecutive loss within a week has left the Oga Boys languishing in 20th position after securing just one point in their last four games.
Ikorodu City FC lost their first home league fixture by a lone goal to the defending champions, Ranger International FC, on Wednesday, Sept. 25, courtesy of a first-half strike by the Flying Antelopes striker and captain, Chinemerem Ugwueze, who scored a 25th-minute header.
In their second home match against another elite league returnee, Ikorodu City FC started brightly, but they were outplayed by the Solid Miners, who opened the scoring through their captain, Anas Yusuf, in the 44th minute of play.
However, in the closing minutes of the match, Ikorodu City FC leveled the score in the third minute of extra time (48th minute) as Thankgod Chilaka flicked in the ball from a well-connected pass from captain Waliu Ojetoye.
The Oga Boys returned to the pitch in the second half with a high-pressing game but could not break through the wall of the Solid Miners until the visitors scored the winning goal.
Kabiru Balogun scored a curling free kick in the 66th minute to put his side in the lead as the Bright Ozebagbe-tutored team watched helplessly.
The coach of Nasarawa United, Kabiru Dogo, on the sidelines of the match, said that the win was well-deserved after the team's efforts.
"We seriously needed this win, and God knows how important it is for the team.
"We were almost down before the match, but I had to tell the young team to take it easy because they are just coming from the lower league.
"The boys today followed the instructions and played well, and I know this win will be a morale booster for the team.
"The government of Nasarawa State also deserves praise for motivating the team," he said.
