2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 35: League race not over yet for us, says George

Posted : 25 April 2025

As the end of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season approaches, with four games left, one of the standout matches for Match Day 35 will be the star fixture between Kano Pillars FC and Rivers United FC.

The lead duel for the 2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 35, to be held on Friday, will feature four-time league winners, Sai Masu Gida, against one-time winners, the Pride of Rivers. It promises to be a high-tension match, set to be played at the iconic and traditional home turf, the Sani Abacha Stadium Kofar Mata, in the heart of Kano city.

Looking ahead to the duel, the Technical Adviser of Rivers United, Finidi George, who has previously tasted the sweet victory of winning the league with his former club, Enyimba International FC, is confident of winning another league title. He hopes to dislodge the current league leaders, Remo Stars, who are ahead by seven points.

In an interview, George insisted that his side won’t give up on their pursuit of a second NPFL title, despite being seven points behind Remo Stars.

With four games remaining before the end of the campaign, Finidi is confident his side can overtake Remo Stars at the top of the table.

"Four games, that’s 12 points. We still have two home matches. We are trying to pile pressure on Remo. We will not relent, and we will see how we can go away and get something out of the Kano Pillars game," Finidi said.

“You can see that on my face, I’m always positive.”

For Kano Pillars, the match against Rivers United is crucial as they are also chasing a continental ticket. There are two slots to be contested, with more than five clubs chasing the same goal.

Currently, Ikorodu City FC is in a strong third position, possessing the required firepower, followed by a surprise team in fourth place, Abia Warriors. Bendel Insurance, defending champions Rangers International, Shooting Stars SC, and Enyimba International FC all rank above Sai Masu Gida.

For Kano Pillars, every point matters if they want to secure the continental slot.

Head to Head:

Rivers United FC holds the bragging rights in the head-to-head over the past five matches, with three wins against Kano Pillars FC, one win for Kano Pillars, and one draw.
