2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 34: Promise Keepers in high spirit ahead of Sunday clash against Peace Boys

Posted : 19 April 2025

After earning a vital 2-0 away win against Kwara United on Sunday and boosting their hopes of avoiding relegation in the Nigeria Premier Football League, Akwa United FC is set to take another step forward in the 2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 34 fixture against Plateau United FC.

The Promise Keepers have made their intentions clear ahead of the crucial away match against Plateau United this Sunday at the New Jos Stadium, stating that they are targeting nothing less than a win.

In a post on their social media handle, the Promise Keepers boldly declared: “Akwa United targets away win in Jos.”

After an impressive run in March, which saw them pick up four wins and a draw, Akwa United have struggled in April, collecting just one point from two league matches. They are now determined to bounce back and strengthen their hopes of avoiding relegation.

The team received a morale boost in midweek with a narrow 1-0 win over Inter Lagos in the President Federation Cup, securing a place in the quarter-finals. They’ll now hope to carry that positive momentum into the NPFL as they search for only their second away win of the season.

Akwa United, the 2021 NPFL champions, currently sit in 18th place with 38 points from 33 games — four points behind Plateau United, who are 13th with 42 points.

The Uyo-based side has enjoyed the better record in past meetings, with seven wins compared to Plateau United’s four. Six other matches have ended in draws. In recent clashes, Akwa United have secured four wins from their last six meetings with Plateau United, who have recorded just one victory in that period. Their most recent clash ended 1-0 in favour of Akwa United in Uyo, thanks to a late goal from Friday Apollo.

Coach Kennedy Boboye’s men will be confident of completing the double this season and may stick with the same lineup that secured the Federation Cup win on Wednesday in Abuja.

With the season nearing its end, every point matters — and Akwa United have made it clear: they’re coming to Jos for all three.
