2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 33: Sunshine Stars break Enyimba's heart

Sunshine Stars secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Enyimba FC on Match Day 33 of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode.


Goals from strikers Elmer Arunta and Waheed Adebayo were enough to seal the win for the Owena Whales, despite a spirited effort from the People’s Elephant.


The match, which was keenly contested, saw Sunshine Stars showcase resilience and determination, earning them all three points despite a first-half goal from Enyimba's Christian Nnaji.


Speaking after the game, striker Elmer Arunta expressed joy over the hard-fought victory, describing it as a morale booster for the team.


“It was a difficult game, but we remained focused. This win will definitely motivate us going forward,” Arunta said.


On his part, Sunshine Stars coach Akinfolarin Bobola also shared his thoughts on the match, calling the win a relief after recent disappointing results.


“We needed this. It gives us a push. We still have work to do, especially on the players’ physical strength, but I believe we are heading in the right direction,” he noted.


Meanwhile, team manager and head of the Sunshine Stars FC Caretaker Committee, Tokunbo Akinyelure, praised the players for their doggedness and dedication. 


He dedicated the victory to the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, supporters of Sunshine Stars, and the people of the state.


“Our boys showed real fighting spirit today. This win is for Governor Aiyedatiwa and the good people of Ondo State. 


“I also want to appreciate our supporters here in Ijebu-Ode. They came out in large numbers, and their support meant a lot,” Akinyelure said.


Sunshine Stars will next travel to Port Harcourt for a Match Day 34 clash against Rivers United.
