In their bid to gain reprieve from relegation struggles, Bayelsa United FC put up a spirited fight against Katsina United FC on Sunday at the Mohammadu Dikko Stadium, ending the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 32 fixture in a 2-2 stalemate.
Bayelsa United FC’s 19-year-old forward, Rabiu Abdullahi, drew first blood in the 44th minute, while Bello Lukman scored a late equalizer in the 83rd minute to salvage a point for his team.
The Technical Adviser of Bayelsa United FC, Ladan Bosso, reassured fans that his team would do everything possible to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
“Well, it is normal. We came here with a match plan, and we almost executed it because we came to pick all three points. The reason is that we are all struggling at the bottom of the table, so we had a clear plan coming into this game. We have no business being where we are.
“Looking at the structure of the club—from the government to the management and down to the players—we are all well motivated.
“If we could leave Yenagoa about seven days ago, after the Challenge Cup in Kaduna, and still take a flight from Abuja to this venue, it means the players had enough rest. That’s a testament to the effort from the government.
“We also made the players understand the situation we are in. For the remaining matches, both home and away, we must resolve that if Katsina United FC can come to our ground and take a point, we should be able to do the same here at their home.
“It’s a case of fighting back, seeking revenge, and struggling out of relegation waters.
“The next step is to get the other matches right and also challenge for the President Federation Cup to see what we can make of it.”
The Technical Adviser of Katsina United, TA Azeez, noted that the players could not be blamed for the stalemate.
“It was a game well played, and I will not blame the boys for the outcome because they tried their best.
“Games are like that—you win some, you lose some. We have to take it in good faith. We’ll just go back and prepare for our next matches, which are back-to-back away games against Remo Stars FC and Ikorodu City FC.
“They didn’t beat us technically. We had our chances and were a bit anxious in getting the equalizer,” he said.
