2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 32 Southwest Derby: Shooting Stars aim at bragging right in Ibadan

Posted : 06 April 2025

The Technical Adviser of Shooting Stars SC of Ibadan has reiterated his stance on not taking any prisoners when it comes to the fight for the soul of Southwest football among the competing clubs.

Earlier, in the late 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, Shooting Stars were dominant in determining who gets what in the Southwest. Currently, the club is still the most successful side in the entire Southwest geopolitical zone, which comprises Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Lagos States.

The Oluyole Warriors have outlived other major competing clubs such as Leventis United, Stationary Stores, Julius Berger FC, Abiola Babes, and others.

Now, the Oluyole Warriors are battling with new teams such as high-flying Remo Stars and Ikorodu City, which were founded in recent years.

For Shooting Stars, maintaining the status quo as the biggest club in the Southwest will still be a challenge, as the impressive Oga Boys, who defeated them in the first round on Match Day 12, come knocking at the Lekan Salami Stadium on Sunday.

The Southwest derby promises to be one with high stakes, with 3SC fighting tooth and nail for a top-three spot against a resolute Ikorodu City side that has punched above its weight this season.

Both teams are in striking distance of continental qualification, making this a true six-pointer.

With the table tightly packed, a victory here could propel either team into the top three. A loss, however, could be a serious setback with just a few matches remaining.

Presently, Shooting Stars, coached by Gbenga Ogunbote, sit two places above Ikorodu City with 47 points.

This will be the second time both clubs meet.
