2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 32: Enyimba International FC gains momentum with win over Abia Warriors

Posted : 07 April 2025

Abia Warriors' three-match winning streak came to an end at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba as Enyimba came from behind to claim the Oriental derby bragging rights with a 2-1 victory.

The Warriors had taken the lead against their more illustrious Oriental rivals but failed to hold on as two goals from former Warriors captain Kalu Nweke and Joseph Atule in either half canceled out Anthony Ijoma's goal, securing the three points for the hosts in the Matchday 32 fixture of the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League.

Abia Warriors' manager, Imama Amapakabo, made one change to the side that defeated Lobi Stars in their previous encounter, with Emmanuel Ogbuagu returning to the starting eleven after serving his suspension in place of Wilson Elu.

The match lived up to its billing as an Oriental derby, with Enyimba dominating the first half while Umu Chineke were the better side in the second half.

Enyimba could have taken the lead as early as the fifth minute, but they were denied by Warriors goalkeeper Sharp Uzoigwe, who made a fantastic one-on-one save.

A minute later, the Warriors responded with a chance of their own, but Paul Samson failed to score from Andrew Abalaogu's cross, which was floated to him by Anthony Ijoma.

The Warriors took the lead in the 21st minute when Sunday Megwo escaped his marker and delivered a cheeky cross that Anthony Ijoma headed home for his ninth league goal of the season.

However, the Warriors failed to hold onto the lead as their former captain, Kalu Nweke, scored a curved effort to restore parity in the 35th minute, ending the first half all square.

The second half saw the Warriors dominate play, but against the run of play, they fell behind when Enyimba's talisman, Joseph Atule, scored with a bullet of a shot to give the hosts a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute.

The goal came after a flurry of missed opportunities by the Warriors' attackers, who failed to capitalize on their chances in the final third.

The Warriors searched for the equalizer, but a resilient Enyimba side held on to seal the win.

Up next for Abia Warriors is a home fixture against Rivers United of Port Harcourt.
