The battle for survival for Sunshine Stars FC took a new twist on Wednesday as the visitors, Heartland International FC, compounded their woes after an uninspiring 0-0 stalemate at their newly adopted home in Ijebu Ode.
Recall that the Owena Whales had requested to return to their former stadium, Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium, a request that was sanctioned by the management of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
However, the 2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 31 did not go well, as relegation-threatened Naze Millionaires were forced into a goalless draw.
Sunshine Stars FC returned to the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode, their initially adopted home ground for the 2024/25 season.
In a letter dated Monday, March 24, the NPFL board approved the return of Sunshine Stars, who had played most of their matches at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.
“Sequel to your letter dated 22nd of March 2025, requesting a change of your home matches venue from Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne to Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State,” NPFL COO, Davidson Owumi, said in the letter.
“You are hereby reminded that our earlier correspondence on the issue of change of venue was predicated on your return to your natural home ground at Akure Sports Complex before such further requests could be granted.”
Owena Whales’ hope for a turnaround was dashed by a resolute Heartland side, who held firm for a goalless draw, leaving the Owena Whales searching for answers.
