2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 31: Bayelsa United FC hands Rivers United FC seventh season's defeat

Posted : 27 March 2025

Continental slot-chasing Rivers United FC on Wednesday suffered their seventh defeat of the season after an inspired display by Bayelsa United at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa. Kehinde Malik scored the only goal of the game in the 19th minute, tucking the ball home from long range after a counterattack from the far left.

The Pride of Rivers failed to convert the chances they created after falling behind, with the Bayelsa United defense standing solid against the attacking trio of Phillip Odubia, Samson Obi, and Ubong Friday.

The Creek Boys continued their impressive run of form, having remained unbeaten in their last three matches. On this evidence, it's clear why they are on a roll.

However, the outcome could have been different if Samson Obi had converted the best chance of the match, which he won himself. His shot was on target, but a superb save from Clinton Ezekiel, in goal for Bayelsa United, denied the ball from going in, potentially leveling the score.

Mathias Samuel also had a free-kick hit the woodwork, while Ubong Friday forced a double save from Clinton Ezekiel, and Emmanuel Nnaji's shot narrowly missed the target.

The Pride of Rivers also owe a debt of gratitude to their experienced goalkeeper, Pius Ibrahim, who replaced Osagie Onisodumeya before the restart of the second half. He put up a five-star performance, making two point-blank saves in the closing stages of the encounter.

The next game is seven days away, back in the President Federation Cup at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, where the Pride of Rivers will face Beyond Limits FA in a Round of 32 clash, kicking off at 4 pm. The next Nigeria Premier Football League game will be at home against Remo Stars on Sunday, 7th April 2025.

Speaking on the match, Finidi rued his team's performance.

“They won, but if you look at the play and what really happened, we don’t deserve to lose, but that’s football.

“We’re not focused on Bayelsa; we have to think about our next home match, which is against Remo. Let’s see how we can win,” Finidi said.
