Lobi Stars' quest for their first win of the season was halted in a heartbreaking 0-1 defeat to Rivers United on Saturday, Sept. 21, in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 3 fixture at the Lafia City Stadium.
The game started with promise for the Pride of Benue, but early missed chances proved costly.
Alao Dabani came close in the 6th minute with a one-on-one opportunity but couldn't convert. Later, Suur Kumaga struck the post, and a flurry of corner kicks and free kicks failed to break the deadlock, leaving the first half scoreless.
In the second half, Lobi Stars kept up the pressure, bringing on Stanley Oganbor to boost their attack in the 57th minute.
Waheed Adebayo almost found the net in the 70th minute, but his powerful strike was brilliantly saved by the Rivers United goalkeeper.
Rivers United took their chance in the 79th minute when Kabir Abdullahi tapped in from close range, beating Emmanuel Daniel to give the visitors the lead.
Despite a late surge from the 'Alia Boys,' which saw them bombard the Rivers United defense with waves of pressure, they were unable to find the elusive equalizer. The match ended 0-1, with Rivers United leaving Lafia with all three points.
Lobi Stars will now shift focus to a tricky away fixture in Aba, where they will face Enyimba International on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, in their rescheduled Match Day 2 fixture, hoping to turn their fortunes around.
