Sunshine Stars FC of Akure now find themselves in a dire situation, as they have been relegated to the relegation zone of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table following their 2-2 home draw against another relegation-threatened team, Plateau United FC of Jos.
In the final fixtures of Match Day 29 of the 2024/2025 NPFL, played at the adopted home ground of Remo Stars International in Ikenne, the Owena Whales managed to salvage a 2-2 draw with visiting Peace Boys.
The Owena Whales had to come from behind to level the score, as the visitors took the lead as early as the 9th minute through Vincent Temitope. Stephen Chukwude equalized for his side 18 minutes later.
At the half-hour mark, Plateau United regained their lead with an effort from Sabbath Mancha.
In the 66th minute, the hosts equalized once again, thanks to an own goal by Anthony Nwadioha.
Thus, Nwadioha’s own goal was Sunshine Stars' saving grace, as they could have lost the match.
As a result, the Owena Whales remain in the relegation zone with 33 points after 29 matches, sitting 17th on the table.
