Rivers United FC, at the beginning of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, was emphatic about its ambitions—either to win the league or, at the very least, secure a continental ticket.
With the league title slipping away as leaders Remo Stars FC have opened an 11-point gap at the top of the table with just 10 matches to go, the Pride of Rivers is now fully focused on the race for a continental spot.
However, Rivers United’s head coach, Finidi George, has made it clear that he is determined to challenge for a continental ticket. That resolve will be tested again this weekend as they travel to Maiduguri to face El-Kanemi Warriors in what promises to be an intense fixture.
For the Desert Warriors, home games have been crucial, as they have one of the best home records in Maiduguri.
El-Kanemi often maximizes the advantage of playing in front of its passionate fans, making it a tough challenge for Rivers United, who will essentially be up against the "12th man" in this 2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 29 encounter.
If Finidi George’s side can escape from Maiduguri with at least a point, it will keep them in the title race while solidifying their chances of qualifying for continental football.
Rivers United currently sits second on the log with 44 points, two ahead of Rangers in fifth and eight points behind league leaders Remo Stars.
