Enugu's Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium erupted as reigning NPFL champions, Rangers International FC, delivered a resounding 3-0 victory over Kwara United on Saturday, March 15, 2025. This Matchday 29 triumph marked a crucial return to winning form for the "Flying Antelopes."
With head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu rushing to join the Super Eagles' World Cup qualifying camp after leading his team to victory, he had entrusted starts to Ikechukwu Mgbemena and Daniel Onyia, a decision that proved inspired.
From the whistle, Rangers displayed relentless attacking intent. Chiedozie Okorie ignited the stadium in the very first minute, slotting home a lightning-fast goal.
The home side continued to press, doubling their advantage before the half-hour mark. Okorie turned provider, setting up Isaac Saviour for his eighth goal of the season. The stadium buzzed with excitement as Rangers asserted their dominance.
Rangers nearly extended their lead further before halftime. Substitute Frank Uwumiro narrowly missed connecting with an inch-perfect cross from Okorie. Okorie himself came agonizingly close, evading Kwara United goalkeeper Nurudeen Badmus, but his shot drifted just wide.
The second half mirrored the first, with Rangers maintaining their attacking momentum. In the 59th minute, Uwumiro capitalized on a defensive mix-up, stabbing home Rangers' third goal.
The home defense, led by Austin Opara and Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, remained resolute, denying Kwara United any consolation. A moment of note was the introduction of teenage sensation Chimobi Igwilo, who received his NPFL "baptism."
This victory propelled Rangers to third place in the 20-team league, with 45 points from 29 matches. The remaining Matchday 29 fixtures are scheduled for Sunday, March 16, 2025.
Coach Ekeh Ekenedilichukwu of Rangers, speaking after the match, praised his team's performance, stating, "It was a good day in the office for our players, a complete turnaround from last weekend.
"We created numerous chances and converted three, which is a huge boost. We remain positive about finishing the season strongly."
Kwara United's coach, Tunde Sanni, expressed disappointment: "This wasn't the result we came for, especially after Rangers denied us points at home. My players lost possession too easily, particularly in midfield. We need to address these issues."
Man-of-the-match Chiedozie Okorie expressed gratitude, saying, "I thank my teammates, coaches, and management for their support. I give God all the glory for this win and hope to contribute even more."
