Posted : 09 March 2025

Samson Obi's strike seven minutes from full time on Saturday gave Rivers United FC a crucial win against a resolute Niger Tornadoes at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium for the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 28 fixtures.

It was a game with little goalmouth action throughout, but it was left to the workaholic Samson Obi – on his third appearance since joining the Pride of Rivers in the mid-season transfer window – to score the only goal of the game, moving the team to eight points behind leaders Remo Stars on the NPFL log.

This victory extends the Finidi George-tutored team's run to 11 consecutive home wins against Tornadoes, and it could yet prove significant come the end of the season.

After the match, Samson Obi became the 11th Rivers United player to score at least one goal this season. Obi's strike is the team's 26th goal of the season.

Rivers United FC have now won 10 home games at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium this season (P14, W10, D3, L1).

The Pride of Rivers have also kept 13 clean sheets so far this season and scored at least one goal in 13 out of 14 home matches this season.

On the other hand, Niger Tornadoes have lost 8 away games this season (P14, W4, D2, L8).

Tornadoes have failed to score at least one goal in 5 out of 14 away games this season.

After the match, Niger Tornadoes' coach, Majin Mohammed, lamented his side's loss of concentration towards the end of the match.

Majin said, "We lost concentration at a critical moment, and it cost us the game. But nonetheless, we'll regroup and focus on our next home match to see how we can get our three points."
