2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 28: Plateau United FC struggles to scale past Abia Warriors FC

Having placed eighth heading into the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 28, Abia Warriors' failure to secure maximum points on Match Day 27 proved crucial on the road against the Peace Boys, whose 1-0 loss to current leaders Remo Stars in Ikenne piled pressure on expectations in Jos.


As expected, the encounter featured various moments of action, including a flurry of missed chances and controversial moments until the star player, Olawale Doyeni, stepped up to claim his fifth goal of the season, maintaining his position as the club's leading goalscorer and one of the NPFL's top defensive goal scorers.


First, Plateau United’s Fasanmi Olaniyi’s bicycle kick off a cross nearly found the back of the net after just one minute, with another close attempt coming from his efforts seconds later.


Twenty-eight minutes later, Mancha Sabbath provided a low cross into the opposition area, but Mohammed Umar’s close attempt found the back of the net, though it was ruled offside by the referee.


Abia Warriors' duo of Innocent Godwin and Ojonugba Adejoh both came tantalizingly close to putting their side ahead in the game, but Plateau United goalkeeper John Amah's impressive form continued to deny the attempts until Mohammed Umar was tripped in the opposition area after the 53rd minute, resulting in a penalty call for Plateau United.


Olawale Doyeni capitalized on the opportunity to take his impressive season tally to five goals, securing maximum points for the Peace Boys.


With ten games, six home wins, three draws, and only one win on the road for Ikorodu City over Lobi Stars of Makurdi, this formed the biggest statistic on Match Day 28.


The Peace Boys will now return to Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne for a match against Sunshine Stars of Akure on Match Day 29.
