2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 28: Hard-fighting Plateau United pip Abia Warriors in Jos

Posted : 10 March 2025

A controversial penalty awarded to Plateau United and converted by Olawole Doyeni in the 55th minute was all the Jos-based side needed to beat Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia in a Matchday 28 encounter of the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League, played at the New Jos Stadium in Jos.

Abia Warriors' Technical Adviser, Imama Amapakabo, made three changes to the squad that drew at home in the last league fixture, with Maxwell Kangeshima, Innocent Godwin, and Andrew Abalaogu replacing Paul Samson, Wilson Elu, and Samuel Atavti, respectively.

The first half ended goalless, and nine minutes into the second period, the hosts were awarded a debatable penalty that Doyeni converted to give them the lead.

The Warriors thought they had a penalty of their own when Ojonugwa Adejoh, while through on goal, appeared to be kicked inside the penalty box, but the incident was ignored by the referee.

Nine minutes later, another penalty incident occurred. Sunday Megwo, after receiving a defense-splitting pass, raced into the box but was blatantly pulled back by a Plateau United defender, thus denying the Warriors a goal-scoring opportunity.

Ironically, the center referee, Grema Mohammed, inexplicably failed to award a penalty kick to the Warriors, drawing protests from the visitors' bench.

Despite a fightback by the visitors, the hosts held on to seal the win and condemned Abia Warriors to a heartbreaking defeat.
