Bendel Insurance FC of Benin has continued to maintain their impressive form since Coach Greg Ikhenoba's promotion to head coach, as they defeated Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) 2024/25 leaders, Remo Stars of Ikenne, 2-1 in the Match Day 28 fixture in Benin.
The captain of the resurgent Benin Arsenals, Meyiwa Oritseweyinmi, scored in each half to give Insurance FC all three points against the high-flying Sky Blue Boys from Ikenne.
Meyiwa, whose form and leadership have been consistently superb, gave Insurance an early lead just one minute and 45 seconds into the game. Ini Eden's well-driven cross from the left flank was flicked by Uche Collins towards the well-positioned Meyiwa Oritseweyinmi, who didn't miss his target with his shot, opening the scoring for his side.
The visitors, however, showed some resistance to prevent further goals before the halftime whistle. Uche Collins, Kayode Oke, and Osahon Osobo came close to increasing the tally before halftime.
In the second half, Insurance continued to mount pressure in search of another goal for safety, and their hard work paid off in the 54th minute when Meyiwa again fired a sublime strike.
The visitors made multiple substitutions in search of their rhythm, which worked for them in the 82nd minute when Samuel Anakwe neatly headed home a good reply to force Insurance out of their comfort zone.
Insurance remains consistent in their fight for stability and their push for silverware in the league this season.
Meanwhile, Meyiwa's impressive form earned him the Man of the Match award.
The N150,000 award, sponsored by Nigeria Breweries (NB), was presented by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Edo State, Paul Ohonbamu.
The 2-1 victory over high-flying Remo Stars has helped Insurance climb one step from 8th position with 41 points on the table.
The Benin Arsenals will be guests to Avia Warriors in the Match Day 29 fixture next week.
