Finidi George, the Head Coach of Rivers United Football Club, has acknowledged that his team faced a quality side in Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan and had to work hard for the draw.
Speaking after their goalless outing, George admitted that it was difficult for his team to secure a point against 3SC due to their quality.
George’s Port Harcourt-based Rivers United played out a goalless draw with 3SC in their 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) fixture on Monday.
The Match Day 27 fixture took place at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan.
However, George disclosed that his team had studied 3SC’s last game against Enyimba International of Aba, played on Thursday, to anticipate how the match in Ibadan might unfold.
“It is quite difficult to take a point against Shooting Stars in Ibadan, but I commend my players for the great effort they displayed.
“We watched their last game against Enyimba and anticipated that they would play with two strikers, so we made adjustments by deploying a defensive midfielder.
“We also noticed that they play direct most of the time, but we did well to contain them. I am happy with the point we earned here,” the ex-international said.
He emphasized his team’s determination to recover the points they lost during their poor run in three matches.
“We will continue to work hard, especially after struggling in two or three games that set us back.
“As we approach the final stretch of the league, it will be important for us to win our home games and secure draws away.
“That is the only way to put ourselves in a good position,” George said.
Rivers United are in second place on the NPFL log with 43 points from 27 matches, staying ahead of third-placed 3SC on goal difference.
However, they remain 11 points behind league leaders Remo Stars FC of Ikenne.
