2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 27: Rivers United stagnate Shooting Stars

Rivers United FC on Monday held Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan to a stalemate in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 27 final match.  


The Oluyole Warriors failed to break down visiting Rivers United Football Club of Port Harcourt, as both sides played out a goalless draw.  


The 2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 27 fixture at the Lekan Salami Stadium saw both teams huff and puff, but it was the visitors who had the last smile.  


The result meant Rivers United and 3SC remained second and third, respectively, on the NPFL log with 43 points each, separated by goal difference.  


There were high expectations on both sides from the start of the game, with the hosts needing a win to return to second place and the visitors aiming for at least a draw to maintain their position from previous weeks.  


Joshua Akpan and Anthony Okachi missed good chances in the 12th and 16th minutes, respectively, to give the hosts the lead.  


However, that would have been unjust, as Rivers United had been in control of the game up to that point, displaying superior ball handling and effectively neutralizing 3SC’s attacking threats with solid defensive play.  


This kept the hosts on the back foot for most of the match.  


In the second half, the hosts gained the upper hand, limiting their guests to occasional counterattacks.  


However, the duo of Okachi and Sodiq Ibrahim struggled to break down Rivers United's defense. When they finally did in the 56th and 61st minutes, Ibrahim failed to capitalize on the opportunities.  


The introduction of Mustapha Adams and Monday Gideon boosted 3SC’s attacking efforts, but the visitors remained resolute, holding firm to stay second—11 points behind league leaders Remo Stars FC of Ikenne.
