Rivers United head coach, Finidi George, has admitted to some technical errors in his side's 1-1 stalemate against Akwa United FC in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 25 fixture.
Recall that the Match Day 25 fixture, played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, ended in a 1-1 draw, as the newly employed coach of the Promise Keepers, Kennedy Boboye, struggles to find his footing on his return to the dugout of his former club.
The opposing coach, Finidi, shared the reasons behind his team’s inability to secure maximum points against their hosts but blamed it on some defensive lapses.
Ahead of the match, the former Super Eagles coach, Finidi, was optimistic about his side securing the maximum points against league strugglers, Akwa United FC.
However, despite his team throwing everything at the home side, they had to settle for a pulsating draw.
The Promise Keepers, on the other hand, came into the encounter needing all three points after securing just one win in their last seven league games.
Unfortunately, the visitors, Rivers United, drew first blood early through former Akwa United player Friday Ubong, whose low free-kick went past Darlintin Ovunda.
However, just after the break, Abson Mare headed home the equalizer. Despite Abba Suleiman’s dismissal, Kennedy Boboye’s men could not find the winner.
Finidi, sharing his thoughts, said he would have found a way to get the winning goal, which ultimately failed to come his way.
“I thought we would win, but it didn’t happen. The players performed well, but a slight defensive mistake allowed them to equalize,” Finidi said.
“In the second half, we had another good opportunity where I felt the striker could have finished better. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. Playing with one man less, we had to manage the game and secure a point.
“I would have preferred all three points, but given how the game unfolded, I believe we earned a well-deserved draw.”
