2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 25: Plateau United FC suffers agonizing defeat to Ikorodu City FC

Posted : 22 February 2025

With eight Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 25 fixtures held across different stadiums on Day 1, Plateau United FC’s clash against Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, remained a match full of intrigue.

Since losing their opening games of the NPFL season, the Oga Boys’ 3-0 victory over Bendel Insurance on Matchday 6 sparked a major turnaround in their fortunes, allowing them to pick up crucial points both at home and away, placing them sixth heading into this fixture.

Since the commencement of the second round, the Peace Boys had lost only once, securing vital points both home and away before this encounter.

The match featured high intensity from both sides, with spells of dominance from the Peace Boys and the Oga Boys. Goals from Albert Hilary, Olatunji Abdulmalik, and Oyedokun Tosin decided the game, handing Ikorodu City a 2-1 victory over Plateau United amid a controversial penalty call involving Plateau United’s Yusuf Abdullahi.

Albert Hilary’s 38th-minute strike reaffirmed his goal-poaching skills, finishing off a brilliant pass from Kalu Samuel after a driving run from the left wing.

Ikorodu City’s midfielder, Olatunji Abdulmalik, equalized in the 74th minute, capitalizing on his relentless attacking efforts to put the Oga Boys on the scoresheet multiple times.

After a sustained battle, Tosin Oyedokun secured the winning goal for Ikorodu City with a well-executed finish following fine team play inside the Peace Boys’ area, sealing a 2-1 victory and pushing the Oga Boys into fifth place in the standings.

The NPFL Matchday 25 fixtures on Day 1 saw five draws and three home wins, shaping the league picture.

Among the notable guests in attendance were Plateau State Commissioner of Sports, Hon. Ibrahim Musa Ashoms, and current Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, who witnessed the explosive encounter.

The Peace Boys will now return to Jos to focus on the Plateau State President Federation Cup fixtures before facing Bayelsa United at home on Matchday 26.
