2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 25: Abia Warriors' Ijoma lone strike shoots down Flying Antelopes

A fantastic strike by Anthony Ijoma in the 43rd minute of play earned Abia Warriors Football Club a hard-fought victory over Enugu Rangers International in the Match Day 25 fixture of the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League, played at the Umuahia Township Stadium.


It was a game that lived up to expectations, as spectators got value for their money with the exchange of fire between the Oriental Brothers.


Abia Warriors' Technical Adviser, Imama Amapakabo, made only one change to the side that played against Kano Pillars in Kano last time, with Emmanuel Ogbuagu returning to the starting lineup in place of Hussaini Abdullahi.


The Warriors made their intentions known right from kickoff as they dominated proceedings, but they failed to take the chances that came their way.


As time ticked on and the home side sustained pressure on the reigning champions, it became evident that the inevitable would happen, and so it did in the 43rd minute.


A long pass from Isaac Afolabi was well controlled by Anthony Ijoma, who went on a marauding run, leaving his markers behind. As he entered the visitors' box, everyone expected him to square the ball, but he went for goal instead, unleashing a powerful shot to score his seventh league goal of the season, which turned out to be the match-winner.


After wholesale changes by the Rangers bench, led by Fidelis Ilechukwu, the visitors pressed for the equalizer, but they were kept at bay by a solid Abia Warriors defense.


The only worry for the Warriors was the first-half injury to the team captain, Augustine Njoku, who was stretchered off after 13 minutes of play with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.


Up next for the Warriors is another mid-week match against Kwara United in Ilorin next week.
