It was a dramatic end to a pulsating encounter as Heartland FC of Owerri defeated Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan 2-1.
The Matchday 24 encounter, played at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, saw the Naze Millionaires secure the maximum points with a late penalty.
The match started on a high note as the hosts aggressively took the game to the visitors, not allowing the Oluyole Warriors to settle in.
Goalkeeper Mustapha Lawal and the 3SC defense had to be at their best to curtail the home side's attacks before they eventually caved in the 31st minute when Chukwuma Agor broke the deadlock.
The first half ended with no further goals as Heartland held on to their 1-0 lead.
Coach Gbenga Ogunbote's Oluyole Warriors came into the second half stronger, as the introduction of Adebayo Abayoni, Ekeson Okorie, and Mustapha Adams lifted their performance.
The Ibadan side was awarded a penalty kick nine minutes before the end of the match after Mustapha Adams was fouled in the danger area. The left-footed forward stepped up to convert the resulting kick, sending goalkeeper Kelvin Ogunga the wrong way.
A few minutes later, referee Emmanuel Kolawole awarded the home team a penalty, claiming that a Heartland player was fouled in the box.
Goalkeeper Mustapha Lawal dived the right way to save John Bassey's kick, but the referee ordered a retake, stating that the 3SC goalie had crossed the line.
Bassey made no mistake the second time, converting the retaken kick to give Emmanuel Amunike's coached team a 2-1 victory.
Despite back-to-back losses, the Oluyole Warriors remained second on the log with 40 points from 24 matches and will hope to return to winning ways on Wednesday when they host Lobi Stars of Makurdi in a Matchday 25 fixture.
