2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 23: Table toppers, Remo Stars, face Sunshine Stars in Southwest local derby

With eyes on the ultimate prize, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title race is gradually taking shape as Remo Stars, on Match Day 21 of the 2024/2025 NPFL, have taken a six-point lead over second-placed Shooting Stars SC of Ibadan.  


Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Remo Stars are steadily pushing toward becoming the next champions of the NPFL.  


The team’s coach, Gbenga Ogunmodede, is fully aware of the task ahead of him and is more determined than ever to make the league marathon count.  


As the season approaches its final stretch, the Sky Blue Stars may very well clinch the title.  


For the 2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 22, Ogunmodede's team could open a clear nine-point gap in what should have been an away match. However, because Sunshine Stars now plays its home games at the Remo Stars International Stadium, it will be a battle between the landlord and its tenant.  


Remo Stars have paid their dues after being perennial runners-up—close, but never quite there. Two consecutive second-place finishes behind Enyimba in 2022/2023 and Rangers International in 2023/2024 earned them the reputation of "nearly men."  


But now, with 21 rounds played, they are writing their own script, and it has all the markings of a blockbuster. 

 
Not resting on their laurels, Remo Stars have continued to bolster the squad, now with the signing of international player Samson Olasupo from Serbian side Radnicki Sr. Mirovica.  


The 23-year-old previously played for Katsina United in the NPFL.  


Olasupo is expected to compete for a starting berth alongside Sikiru Alimi and Franck Mawuena in the team.  


The Sky Blue Stars have nothing to fear, as Sunshine Stars in the Southwest derby may pose little to no threat, which could allow Remo Stars to open a 9-point gap.
