Kwara United suffered a 2-1 defeat to Ikorodu City in their Matchday 23 fixture of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday.
The game started on a dramatic note as Junior Aimufua capitalized on a defensive blunder by Ikorodu City's backline to slot in the fastest goal of the match within the first minute.
However, Ajeigbe Toheeb equalized for the hosts in the 7th minute, taking advantage of sustained pressure before halftime.
Despite Kwara United's dominant play and creative attacking moves—led by the impressive Junior Aimufua, who was active with dribbles and crosses—Ikorodu City's defense remained solid, denying the visitors a breakthrough. Goalkeeper Nurudeen Badmus also made crucial saves to keep the Harmony Boys in the game as the first half ended 1-1.
The second half resumed with renewed intensity from both teams. In the 56th minute, Aimufua made a brilliant solo run down the flank, but his final cross found no Kwara United player to convert.
The decisive moment came in the 64th minute when Ishola Adelani connected with a well-taken corner kick, sealing a 2-1 victory for Ikorodu City.
Despite late efforts from Kwara United to salvage a point, Ikorodu City's defense stood firm to deny any equalizer.
After the game, Kwara United head coach Tunde Sanni expressed disappointment over the manner of the winning goal, labeling it a "cheap goal."
"As a coach, you have to experience days like this. The goal that cost us the match was cheap, and I didn’t expect it. But in football, the coach takes the blame, whether positive or negative," he said.
Despite the loss, Kwara United remains in 10th position on the NPFL log. They now turn their attention to two crucial fixtures:
Wednesday: Outstanding Matchday 20 game against 3SC.
Sunday: Matchday 24 clash vs. Bayelsa United at the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl, George Innih Stadium, Ilorin.
