2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 23: Ikorodu City FC in great comeback victory against Kwara United FC

Posted : 10 February 2025

Ikorodu City FC survived a scare from Kwara United FC on Sunday after the visitors took an early lead in the first half, but the home side fought back to score two goals and secure victory in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 23.

The floodlit match, which kicked off at 5:30 p.m. at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, saw the visitors, the Afonja Warriors, open the scoring in the 2nd minute as midfielder Junior Aimufua poked in the first goal.

Furious at conceding so early, Ikorodu City FC responded with intensity and found the equalizer in the 7th minute when Toyeeb Ajeyigbe slammed home a low cross from defender and captain Waliu Ojetoye.

By the 40th minute, Ikorodu City was in total control, pressing hard for the winning goal.

At the start of the second half, Oga Boys' coach, Nurudeen Aweroro, made two substitutions, bringing on Ayomide Cole and Folarin Temitope to replace Chineme Chinonso and Moses Shodeinde.

Coach Aweroro further adjusted the formation in the 60th minute, substituting goal scorer Toyeeb Ajeyigbe for Dada Oladimeji.

The Oga Boys then found the much-needed winning goal in the 64th minute with a brilliant near-post header, courtesy of another assist from Harrison Austin Uzondu, sending the home crowd into jubilation.

Finally, Manasseh Gideon made his club debut, coming on to replace match-winner Shola Adelani in the 93rd minute as Ikorodu City sealed a 2-1 victory.

Speaking after the match, Ikorodu City FC captain Ojetoye acknowledged the team's struggles due to unforeseen circumstances.

“We struggled today, but we managed to pick ourselves up and win the game.

“What matters most is securing the three points, which we were able to achieve in the end. We can't expect teams to just watch us play; they are also fighting for the same points we are chasing,” he said.
