Table-topping Remo Stars FC maintained their firm grip on the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table on Saturday, opening a 9-point gap after securing a 2-1 win over Sunshine Stars of Akure.
The Sky Blue Stars continued their impressive form and title bid with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Owena Whales in a match that was originally an away Southwest Derby but was played at home in Ikenne. Despite this fixture being on home turf, it marked their fourth away win of the season.
The win strengthens Remo Stars' position at the top of the table with 45 points after 22 matches.
The game kicked off with high intensity, and it didn’t take long for the visitors to make their mark.
In the 9th minute, Alex Oyowah opened the scoring with a stunning diving header, connecting perfectly with a pinpoint cross from Sikiru Alimi.
The early goal set the tone for Remo Stars, who continued to dictate the tempo.
Their dominance paid off again in the 28th minute when Ibrahim Abubakar doubled the lead with a moment of brilliance.
Receiving a perfectly weighted pass from Nduka Junior, Abubakar made an intelligent run from deep and lobbed the advancing Sunshine Stars goalkeeper with a composed finish.
Sunshine Stars, however, refused to go down without a fight. They pulled one back in the 67th minute, igniting hopes of a comeback.
Despite late pressure and four minutes of added time, Remo Stars’ defense remained resolute, with substitutes like Ibe Abdulrazaq playing a crucial role in maintaining the lead.
After the match, the team’s defensive discipline was praised as they held firm to secure all three points.
With this victory, Remo Stars remain firmly at the top with 45 points, while Shooting Stars trail with 36 points but have two games in hand, keeping the title race alive.
