As Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin prepares to take on Katsina United on Monday in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 22 fixture, the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission (ESSC), Amadin Desmond Enabulele, has promised the team a surprise package and has also solicited support for the team ahead of the Monday clash. The kick-off time is 4 p.m.
Enabulele expressed his satisfaction with the performances of the Benin Arsenals and their display of class and determination in the league’s Matchday 21 against Rivers United in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
The Benin Arsenals were forced to a 2-2 draw by former league champions Rivers United in the Matchday 21 game at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
The captain of the team, Meyinwa Oritseweyinmi, and Uche Collins scored early goals to put the hosts under pressure before the Pride of Rivers fought back to equalize.
The Edo State Sports Commission boss, who expressed confidence in the Benin Arsenals' ability to win their first home game in the second round of the league, said he has a surprise package for the team. He urged the players not to be complacent when they host their northern opponents.
He also called on sports-loving Edo people, particularly the residents of Benin City, to come out en masse and cheer on their beloved team on Monday as they continue their battle for redemption.
"I am happy to welcome fans and supporters back to the stadium after serving out the NPFL’s three-match closed-doors punishment, following the Matchday 11 incident with Kano Pillars in Benin on September 11, 2024," he said, urging fans not to allow their actions to negatively affect the club.
"I will be happy to have our 12,000-capacity Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium filled on Monday. You can’t separate fans and supporters from the game of football. Enthusiasm and followership are important factors. Come and cheer on your beloved team to victory."
Hon. Enabulele, however, appealed to the fans and supporters to avoid violence and hooliganism and to embrace a culture of discipline and sportsmanship to prevent actions that could damage the reputation of both the club and the league.
"We should understand that no matter how we react to bad calls, it will not change the referee's decision. Our team is now fortified, and we play good football. I am confident that we will finish the season on a high note."
The Benin Arsenals are currently in 17th position on the table and have an outstanding game (MD20) with Enyimba FC.
Securing the maximum three points against Katsina United in the Matchday 22 fixture on Monday, February 3, 2025, in Benin will lift them out of the red zone again.
