Abia Warriors threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 against league leaders Remo Stars on Matchday 21 of the ongoing 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, in a match played in Ikenne Remo, Ogun State.
Coach Imama Amapakabo kept faith with the same squad that defeated Bayelsa United over the weekend, and the lads made a flying start with two goals in two minutes.
Ayodele Ezekiel headed the visitors in front from a well-executed Paul Samson corner kick in the 25th minute, scoring his first goal of the season. Anthony Ijoma doubled the lead for the Warriors two minutes later, after Sunday Megwo controlled a square pass from skipper Augustine Njoku before laying off a simple pass for the Abia Warriors' number nine to blast home.
But the Warriors failed to keep their lead as the hosts scored two goals within eight minutes to draw level after a double substitution.
Adedayo Olamilekan's shot from 24 yards in the 38th minute beat Sharp Uzoigwe in goal for the Umuahia boys, marking their first goal. Malik Jabaar then made it 2-2 in first-half injury time, sending the home fans into a frenzy.
At the start of the second half, Coach Imama brought on Nmecha Johnson for Sharp Uzoigwe in goal, and the substitute was quickly called into action, making some breathtaking saves early in the half.
However, there was nothing he could do in the 53rd minute as Frank Mawuena headed the hosts in front off a corner kick, scoring what later proved to be the winning goal.
The Warriors' bench responded by introducing Innocent Godwin and Sheddy Kenneth for Wilson Elu and Paul Samson, followed by Emmanuel Onu for Ayodele Ezekiel, in an attempt to salvage the match. The substitutes spurred Umu Chineke into a late fightback, but the hosts defended resolutely to see out the game.
Up next for Abia Warriors is a home fixture against Akwa United at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
Meanwhile, the Sky Blue Stars have maintained a firm grip on the top of the 2024/2025 NPFL log, opening a five-point gap with 42 points, ahead of Shooting Stars SC of Ibadan, who sit in second place with 36 points and have a game in hand.
