It was the turn of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) debutants, Ikorodu City FC, to avenge the baptism of fire they endured in their first-ever league match in top-flight football, as they convincingly defeated their aggressors, Kano Pillars, 4-1 in a return fixture in Lagos.
Recall that Sai Masu Gida welcomed the debutants, Ikorodu City FC, to the top-flight league with a 3-0 demolition on Match Day 1 of the 2024/2025 NPFL season at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, Kano, on September 8, 2024.
Playing the return leg at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, the Oga Boys earned their well-deserved pound of flesh, scoring four goals while Sai Masu Gida managed only one in response.
The match began with an early goal rush as soon as the 3rd minute of the highly entertaining encounter, when Shola Adelani put his side ahead with a neat header at the near post from a corner delivered by Salau Yusuf.
Not done yet, Ikorodu City FC doubled their lead in the 20th minute through another assist from Salau Yusuf, as Harrison Austin unleashed a belter from outside the box.
However, 17-year-old Abba Adam pulled one back for Sai Masu Gida in the 38th minute after a sloppy defensive error by the Ikorodu City FC players.
With the first half ending 2-1 in favor of the home side, a more determined Ikorodu City FC secured their third goal through an own goal by Kano Pillars’ ace midfielder, Rabiu Ali, who mistakenly turned in Harrison Austin’s direct corner at his near post.
The coach of the Oga Boys, Nurudeen Aweroro, then made a double substitution, bringing on Freedom Marvelous and Ayomide Cole for Harrison Austin and Toyeeb Ajeyigbe.
The introduction of Ayomide Cole instantly paid off three minutes later in the 73rd minute, as he blasted the ball past the goalkeeper after a hat-trick of assists from Salau Yusuf, making the scoreline 4-1.
Ikorodu City FC coach, Nurudeen Aweroro, stated that his side was well-prepared for the second half of the 2024/2025 NPFL season.
"We are very ready for the second half of the season. We want to play good football and maintain our good position on the table," he said.
