Lobi Stars were on the verge of securing a hard-fought victory on Wednesday, but Akwa United struck late to snatch a 1-1 draw, denying the visitors all three points on Matchday 21 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The match was an electrifying contest from start to finish, with the Alia Boys dominating the early exchanges. Okafor Onyekachi almost put the Pride of Benue ahead in the 4th minute with a powerful header that narrowly missed the target.
However, his persistence paid off in the 28th minute when he dribbled past defenders and unleashed a thunderous shot beyond goalkeeper Darlington Ovunda to give Lobi Stars the lead.
Despite mounting pressure from the hosts, Lobi Stars held firm to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
The second half saw Akwa United increase their attacking intensity, but Lobi Stars' defense stood firm. However, in the 73rd minute, Friday Apollos found the equalizer for the hosts, ensuring both teams shared the spoils.
Daniel Amokachi made key substitutions, introducing Peter Onah, Alex Enejo, Ossy Martins, and Segun Oloruntoba in a bid to snatch all three points, but Akwa United held on defensively until the final whistle.
Speaking after the game, Amokachi praised his players for their resilience:
"We’re getting it right. We didn’t let our loss in Owerri affect us. We will rise and get back to winning ways."
Lobi Stars remain 18th on the log with 21 points and will return to their adopted home, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi, to host Enyimba International FC in their next fixture.
