2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 20: Lobi Stars fall short in Owerri despite dominant display

Posted : 27 January 2025

Lobi Stars were unable to secure a win in their Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 20 clash against Heartland FC, losing 1-0 at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.

The match, which marked the start of the second stanza, saw Lobi Stars create several chances but fail to find the net.

Sunday Chinedu’s crucial header in the 11th minute and a brilliant save by goalkeeper Japheth Opobo denied Heartland FC the lead in the first half.

Jackson Eru’s free kick in the 13th minute rattled the crossbar, as Lobi Stars' offensive efforts continued to pressure the hosts, but the first half ended goalless.

After the break, Lobi Stars intensified their attack, with Jackson Eru, Ossy Martins, and Stanley Oganbor continuing to create opportunities. However, it was Heartland FC who broke the deadlock in the 58th minute with a header from John Bassey, leaving goalkeeper Opobo stranded.

Despite fresh substitutes like Segun Oloruntoba, Samuel Tiza, Okafor Onyekachi, Alex Enejo, and Reuben Yem, Lobi Stars could not find the equalizer, as the hosts held firm until the final whistle.

Technical Adviser Daniel Amokachi praised his players, saying, "I give my players a thumbs up because they definitely gave all they could."

He also acknowledged Coach Emmanuel Amunike for his positive contributions, expressing belief in the team’s potential to reach greater heights.

With this result, Lobi Stars will now shift their focus to their next challenge, facing Akwa United in Uyo midweek, with the team currently sitting in 18th place with 20 points from 20 games.
