Kennedy Boboye will begin Akwa United's redemption mission on Sunday against Remo Stars as the NPFL returns after the first stanza break, Sports247 reports.
Boboye, who is on a rescue mission with the club he led to the league title in 2021, faces league leaders Remo Stars and will be seeking nothing but three points to start the year on a winning note. The turf at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium will surely be tested as these two gladiators clash on Sunday.
The Promise Keepers ended the first round of the season in 19th position after a run of five victories, four draws, and ten losses, accumulating 19 points from the same number of matches.
The 2021 league champions appear solid and ready for the second stanza, following some technical changes made by the club’s management. These changes include the return of coach Kennedy Boboye as head coach after the resignation of Muhammed Babaganaru, who left the club before the end of the first round.
Coach Boboye, who led Akwa United to their first league title in 2021, arrived in Uyo with his assistant coach Ifeanyi Nwachukwu. Both have teamed up with other assistant coaches to embark on a redemption mission to elevate the club to a more comfortable position on the log by the end of the second stanza of the season.
The management and technical staff have strengthened the team with the signing of quality players. These include forwards Uche Sabastine from PSports Academy and Orji Chisom from Sporting Lagos, midfielders Ogar Sabastine and Samuel Tochukwu from PSports Academy, and defender Adamu Umar from Sunshine Stars. Additionally, right-back Asuquo Etiene has been recalled from his loan spell with Dakkada FC.
The two-time FA Cup winners have played three mid-season friendly matches: a 5-0 thrashing of Immortality Academy, a 3-0 win over NNL side Godswill Akpabio United FC, and a 1-1 draw with NPFL team Abia Warriors. These games served as preparations for the second half of the season.
Returning to familiar territory, Coach Boboye will be eager to make a positive start with the club. He will expect his players, especially strikers Chijioke Alaekwe and Friday Apollos (who scored nine goals between them in the first round), to continue their good form in the second stanza.
Akwa United lost 2-1 to Remo Stars in Ikenne during the first installment of this fixture on matchday 19. They will be hoping to maintain their dominance over the visitors, who have not won in any of their previous visits to Uyo.
The head-to-head record between the two teams shows that Akwa United has enjoyed a superior advantage, with six victories to Remo Stars' three wins, and one game ended in a 2-2 draw in Ijebu Ode back in 2017.
