Hosts Remo Stars Football Club of Ikenne defeated Sunshine Stars FC of Akure 1-0 to take the lead in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table.
In a Match Day 2 fixture at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Shuaibu Ibrahim scored after seven minutes to secure the full points for the hosts.
Ibrahim latched onto a pass floated over the retreating Sunshine Stars players from just after the center circle. He controlled the high ball, shrugged off the attention of two opponents with good pace, and veered to the right side of the visiting goalmouth.
Ibrahim then struck a low shot past the advancing goalkeeper, David Obiazo, to score and push his team to six points from two games, with three goals scored and none conceded.
The goal momentarily settled the opening back-and-forth encounter between the two sides, although the visitors quickly fought back, with the hosts seemingly sitting on their lead.
However, the visitors' fightback lacked firepower, and the hosts easily held them off to secure a slim win that places them at the top of the league.
This position could change by Sunday evening after six other Match Day 2 fixtures, with five other teams looking capable of overtaking them on goal difference.
Earlier on Saturday, former champions Rivers United of Port Harcourt defeated visiting Heartland FC of Owerri 3-1 to move into second position on the table.
