Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) Head Coach Gbenga Ogunbote has expressed the need to bolster his team’s attacking options during the mid-season transfer window of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). Despite sitting in third place after 19 matches, Ogunbote acknowledged that the Oluyole Warriors still face challenges in their forward line.
3SC have accumulated 33 points from 10 wins, three draws, and five losses, scoring 18 goals and conceding 13 in the process. Their most recent victory, a narrow 1-0 win against Kwara United at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, came courtesy of a deflected free-kick from substitute Mustapha Adams in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time. Reflecting on the result, Ogunbote admitted the team’s attacking struggles were exacerbated by injuries and the absence of Samuel Ayanrinde, who was away on national duty.
“The only 3SC player available for the attack while Samuel Ayanrinde was away has been playing with injuries,” Ogunbote said. “We’ve managed the team to this mid-season, but the attack remains an area of concern. We’re actively seeking centre-forwards and hope to recruit two or three soon.” He also noted that, while Kwara United dominated the second half, 3SC focused on protecting their slender lead to secure maximum points in what he described as a tense derby.
On the opposing side, Kwara United’s Head Coach, Tunde Sanni, attributed the goal his team conceded to an unfortunate deflection. He described his squad as “a work in progress” and expressed confidence that they could secure a better result when 3SC visit Ilorin for the league’s second stanza. Sanni also commended the NPFL management, highlighting the numerous away wins in the first round as evidence of the league’s improvement.
