Ikorodu City FC on Sunday bounced back to winning ways with a 2-1 triumph over visiting Sunshine Stars FC in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 19 fixtures in the Southern derby.
The Oga Boys had suffered a three-match winless streak, including a 0-2 loss to Abia Warriors in Match Day 18 and a 1-1 draw in Lagos against the 10-man Remo Stars United FC. They also struggled against Bayelsa United FC at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, where they were beaten 0-1.
However, Ikorodu City FC returned to winning ways in this match. Shola Adelani opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a fantastic strike. Oga Boys looked to have extended their lead in the 44th minute when Alade turned the ball into the net off a great cross from Rivio Anyanwere, but the goal was ruled out for offside after consultation with the assistant referee.
Sunshine Stars leveled the score in the 45th minute following a defensive mistake by Ikorodu City FC’s defenders. The inspirational captain of Ikorodu City FC, Waliu Ojetoye, was introduced in the 60th minute, replacing Shola Adelani. Ojetoye had been absent for three consecutive matches due to his involvement with the Super Eagles B team in CHAN qualifiers against the Ghana Black Galaxies.
After much drama, the referee added six minutes to the regulation time. In the 96th minute, Ikorodu City's Cole was brought down in the box, and a penalty was awarded. Despite the protests from the visitors, the referee upheld the decision, and Rivio scored from the spot to settle the Southwest Derby.
