As sixth-placed Ikorodu City FC prepares to face Sunshine Stars of Akure in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 19 Southwest Derby, the chairman of the club, Sanmi Doherty, has expressed confidence in securing maximum points from the game.
Doherty also commended the club’s fans, highlighting their peaceful nature and unwavering support. "I want to sincerely thank Ikorodu City FC fans. They are the reason behind our success, and we love them for all that," he said. He also urged fans to continue promoting peace and unity, urging them not to be swayed by negative publicity. "There are many bad publicity going around, but we are not here to play politics in the game. Football is our main focus."
He addressed the unfortunate incident in which a fan slapped the assistant coach of Remo Stars at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, clarifying that it was an isolated occurrence. "The incident was a one-off thing and not because the game ended in a draw. We have lost about four consecutive matches at our stadium without any violence. Notable losses include matches against Nasarawa United FC and Rangers International FC, where we embraced the situation and moved on," Doherty explained.
Looking ahead to the NPFL fixture against Sunshine Stars, Doherty emphasized the team’s readiness to return to winning ways. "In the recent ranking, we received recognition from CAF due to our unbeaten streak. The boys are gearing up, and we have only one target: to secure maximum points." He also expressed hope that the team’s captain, Waliu Ojetoye, who has been with the Super Eagles B for the CHAN 2025 qualifiers, will return in time for the match. "We really miss our captain, but the decision to allow him to play rests with the coach," he added.
Doherty also praised the club's management and the Lagos State government for their continued support, particularly the use of the beautiful Mobolaji Johnson Arena. "The arena is always filled to capacity whenever we play. I’ve traveled far and wide, but I believe Ikorodu City FC fans are the best in Nigeria," he said. He anticipates even more fans at the arena in the second round of the season and expressed gratitude to the club’s sponsors. This will be the first-ever meeting of both clubs in the NPFL.
