Akwa United FC on Monday night secured a vital win in their battle against relegation, defeating Heartland Owerri 2-0 in their 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 18 encounter at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
Akwa United interim coach Umar Abdullahi made three changes to the side that lost to Bayelsa United, introducing Friday Apollos, David Phillip, and Darlington Ovunda to replace Samuel Matthew, Paul Acquah, and Hakeem Otuyiga.
The home side was awarded a penalty in the 30th minute when Osoba Kabir was brought down by Heartland goalkeeper Ebuka Nwokoecha inside the box. Endurance Ebedebiri converted the penalty with a brilliant strike to give Akwa United the lead.
The "Promise Keepers" extended their lead in the 68th minute, as a pinpoint delivery from David Phillip was headed in by Chijioke Alaekwe, making the scoreline 2-0.
Despite Heartland’s efforts to stage a comeback, the game ended 2-0 in favor of the home team.
